Claude will now build a skill by watching you do the task once

Anthropic added Record a skill to the Claude desktop app. You open the + menu, hit record, and do a task while talking through it. Your screen, clicks, typing, and voice go to Claude, which turns the demonstration into a skill it can run again later. The announcement shows a 23-second recording saved as /file-expenses. It’s live for Pro, Max, and Team plans.

Skills already existed as the primitive here: a folder with an instruction file Claude reads to do a repeatable job. Until now you wrote that by hand, which meant the people who most wanted to automate a fiddly weekly chore were exactly the ones who couldn’t. This reaches the same thing from the other end. Instead of describing the procedure, you perform it once and let the model write it up. Demonstration is how you’d teach a coworker, and it turns out it’s a lower floor than a text editor.

The catch is where it lives. This is the cloud Claude in the paid desktop app, not anything running on your own hardware, so the skill it captures is only as portable as Anthropic lets it be. I already run lvl30’s radar and social automation as hand-authored skills, and I’d want to read the file it generates before I trusted it with my expenses. But the friction it removes is real, and recording a task you already know beats writing pseudocode for one you’re still figuring out. The keyboard was never the natural way to teach a machine a chore. Showing it was.
