Meta starts selling the model: Muse Spark 1.1 lands with a paid API

Meta Superintelligence Labs shipped Muse Spark 1.1 on July 9, an upgrade to the model it debuted in April: multimodal, built for agentic work, with a million-token context the model actively compacts and multi-agent delegation across parallel subagents. By Meta’s own launch table it leads on tool use and trails Opus 4.8 and GPT-5.5 on coding, and “by Meta’s own numbers” is doing real work in that sentence, because no independent benchmarks exist yet.
The model is the smaller half of the announcement. The bigger half: Meta opened the Meta Model API in US public preview, $1.25 per million input tokens, $4.25 per million output, $20 in starter credits. That is Meta, the company whose entire AI story used to be “we give the weights away,” now selling metered access to a closed model, the same business as OpenAI and Anthropic.
Worth saying plainly: Muse Spark 1.1 ships no weights. The company that put Llama on half the benches in this hobby, mine included, is now on the other side of the counter. The open-weight torch has been passing to Qwen, GLM, and friends for a year; this is the week Meta stopped pretending to carry it.
